Architecture is a strange mixture of obstinate persistance and constant flux. Just as science has recently shown that all of us carry “inner” Neanderthal genes, each element, too, carries long strands of junk DNA that dates from time immemorial…
In 1914, it made sense to , perhaps, to talk about “Chinese” architecure, “Swiss” architecture, “Indian” architecture… One hundred years later, under the influence of wars, revolutions, diverse political regimes, different states of development, architectural movements, individual talents, friendships, and technological progress, architectures that were once specific and local have become seemingly interchangeable and global. Has national identity been sacrified to modernity?
